Day 12: Phillies @ Pirates pregame

Manager John Russell posted his first lineup of the spring, with most of the expected Opening Day starters in it. The exception, of course, is the absence of third baseman Andy LaRoche, who is still progressing back from missing time with a lower back strain.

Morning squeeze:

  • Talked with Luis Cruz this morning and he described his injury on Tuesday as nothing more than a severe cramp in his upper left thigh. The Pirates labeled it as a strained left hip flexor yesterday afternoon. Cruz said he felt fine Wednesday morning and was checked out by the medical staff, who said it’s nothing serious. Though the Pirates initially expected Cruz to be out for a week, he said he should be ready to play in games this weekend.
  • Virgil Vasquez will be throwing on Wednesday for the first time since last Thursday.
