Day 14: Braves @ Pirates

UPDATE: Eric Hinske has been scratched from Friday’s lineup because of a left rib cage contusion. Hinske suffered the injury on Wednesday when he ran into the outfield wall. Hinske was slated to DH and hit sixth and has been replaced by Pedro Alvarez, who will be making his first start of the spring.

Sandwiched between two lengthy travel days for players and writers alike is Friday’s home game, a much needed respite for all of us. This will be Atlanta’s only trip to Bradenton this spring, though the Pirates will return the favor later in March with their own journey to Orlando.

As for your morning squeeze:

  • Utilityman Luis Cruz (strained left hip flexor) took batting practice on Thursday and then fielded grounders early Friday morning. He said he is scheduled to participate in full practice on Saturday (infield practice and BP). The Pirates will likely give him Sunday to rest before Cruz makes his spring debut on Monday.
  • Many of the regulars return to the Pirates lineup after not making the trip to Fort Myers on Thursday. Also, Jose Tabata and Jeff Salazar have been penciled in for their first starts of the spring.
