Day 23: Astros @ Pirates

There is still no definitive prognosis on outfielder Brandon Moss, who sprained his right thumb trying to make a diving catch on Saturday. Moss had X-rays on the thumb on Saturday night and said that the X-rays detected no breaks.

He was then checked out by team physician Dr. Patrick DeMeo on Sunday morning, and DeMeo diagnosed the injury as a bad contusion. Dr. DeMeo does not suspect a ligament tear.

However, Moss is going to get another opinion on Monday. He is flying to Pittsburgh on Sunday night where he will see then hand specialist Mark Baratz at Allegheny General Hospital tomorrow. Moss is expected to have an MRI there as part of the visit.

Moss was walking around the clubhouse wearing a protective soft case and described the swelling as “pretty bad” underneath that cast.

Also of note: outfielder Jose Tabata (mild right shoulder inflammation) took part in the team’s batting practice on Sunday, a sign that he might be ready to return in a DH role soon. On Saturday, manager John Russell said that Tabata could be cleared to DH as early as Monday.
