May 10: Pirates (12-18) @ Mets (16-13)

Absolutely gorgeous day here in NYC, which is something we haven’t had in a while it seems like. Let’s hope spring is here to stay finally. And Happy Mother’s Day to my mom back home in Georgia (who I’m sure is going to tune in to the game) and to mothers everywhere.

In honor of Mother’s Day and to bring awareness to breast cancer, 10 players will swing pink bats on Sunday — Morgan, Vazquez, Sanchez, McLouth, Adam LaRoche, Andy LaRoche, Hinske, Monroe, Moss, Jaramillo. Players will also wear pink wrist bands, and the lineup card is pink. Nate McLouth will be wearing pink cleats.

The clubhouse was pretty upbeat this morning considering the team has dropped seven straight and 11 of its last 12. Not sure if this should be reason for concern, but Sunday’s starter Ian Snell has never beaten the Mets (four starts/five appearances) and has not won on the road this season (0-4 in four starts). Now, to give Snell the benefit of the doubt, he has received a total of just three runs in his last three road starts combined. Certainly there would be no better day than Sunday for all that to turn around.

Other news and notes…

  • Shortstop Jack Wilson was scheduled to play one more rehab game with Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday, but because of chilly conditions, Wilson instead is returning to Pittsburgh where he will have a work out on Monday. Wilson is still expected to be activated from the DL on Tuesday. Brian Bixler will be sent down when Wilson returns. Wilson went 1-for-3 with an RBI double for the Indians on Saturday.
  • Closer Matt Capps is also still on track to be cleared to return on Tuesday. He threw a side session on Sunday (about 35 pitches).
  • Freddy Sanchez was out of the lineup on Sunday, but it has nothing to do with any sort of injury. Manager John Russell said he wanted to simply give the second baseman the day off. Sanchez said he was feeling better than 100 percent.
