June 3: Mets (28-23) @ Pirates (24-28)

Typical gloomy Pittsburgh day and I’m not sure the rain is going to let up in time to get in tonight’s game. The radar isn’t promising at this point, and any sort of delay is definitely not what anyone wants with a 12:35 pm game on the docket for tomorrow.

NHL play-by-play announcer Mike Emrick, in town obviously for the Penguins-Red Wings series, was making his rounds in the Pirates’ clubhouse earlier. He stopped and chatted with outfielder Nyjer Morgan to learn about Morgan’s hockey background.

Brief injury updates: Tyler Yates (right elbow inflammation) is throwing on flat ground and should be ready to throw off the mound by Thursday. From there he’ll progress to where he can then be sent out on a rehab stint. … Donnie Veal (strained right groin) is improving and is expected to begin a rehab stint with Triple-A Indianapolis beginning next week.

Triple-A third baseman Neil Walker dislocated his left pinkie finger diving into first base in Tuesday night’s game. Fortunately, Walker’s X-rays came back negative and he is listed as day-to-day. He shouldn’t be out for anymore than a week.

As for the Mets, they get Carlos Beltran back on Wednesday (assuming there is a game). Beltran has been out with a stomach virus. He wasn’t in manager Jerry Manuel’s initial lineup, but he was added in around 4 p.m.
