Huntington: No deal with C Tony Sanchez yet
GM Neal Huntington said on Wednesday that the Pirates have not yet come to an agreement with first-round and No. 4 overall pick Tony Sanchez, a catcher out of Boston College. But all indications are that it could just be a matter of days.
“We’re optimistic,” Huntington said. “But there’s no deal in place.”
Sanchez said on Tuesday, shortly after being drafted, that he’s eager to get playing. He will sign for “slot” or lower, which the Pirates knew ahead of time, so there’s no reason for any drawn-out negotiations.
In fact, before the Pirates drafted Sanchez on Tuesday I heard from a baseball source that there was already a handshake deal worth about $2.25-$2.3 million before Sanchez was drafted.
