The Hillcats are one win away from winning the Carolina League’s Mill Cup Championship after a come-from-behind, 5-4, win over the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday. A walk-off solo homer by outfielder Jose De Los Santos with two out in the bottom of the ninth sealed the victory.
Lynchburg (high Single-A) entered the bottom of the 8th down by one but tied the game up when Jamie Romak drew a bases-loaded walk with no outs. The Hillcats, however, were unable to push another run across in the inning, though that only set the stage for De Los Santos’ heroics an inning later. The center fielder had gone 3-for-3 with two RBIs in Game 1 of the Championship series.
Rudy Owens started the game for the Hillcats and allowed two earned runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven. Ronald Uviedo picked up the win after pitching a scoreless ninth.
Second baseman Chase D’Arnaud went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Game 3 of the series will be played in Salem on Thursday.
