Jackson designated for assignment
The Pirates designated right-hander Steven Jackson for assignment on Tuesday night, which allowed free agent outfielder Ryan Church to be officially added to the 40-man roster. Though Church had reached an agreement with the club a week ago, that deal had not yet been confirmed by Major League Baseball or the Player’s Association because of the influx of signings during the last few days.
Once the Church signing became official, the Pirates were forced to make a roster move since outfielder Brandon Jones had been added earlier in the day. The Pirates picked Jones up off waivers from the Braves.
The Pirates now have 10 days to trade, release or outright Jackson to the Minors. For the latter to occur, the right-hander would have to first clear waivers. Jackson was expected to compete for one of the final bullpen spots. He went 2-3 with a 3.14 ERA in 40 appearances for Pittsburgh last year.
