Intrasquad update

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

Lefty Zach Duke pitched five scoreless innings in an intrasquad start over at Pirate City this morning. Duke struck out nine, walked one and allowed one hit. That hit actually came with five outs (yes, five) in the fifth. Duke was only scheduled to pitch five innings, but to get to his pitch count goal, he needed to get six outs in the fifth. That tells you how efficient Duke was. He finished with 71 pitches.

Duke faced a lineup of Pirates Minor Leaguers in the game. Third baseman Pedro Alvarez was the most notable name in that opposing lineup.
