Pearce headed to Pittsburgh

First baseman Steve Pearce has been told that he will be joining the Pirates on Tuesday as the club gets ready to open a nine-game homestand. In 23 games with Triple-A Indianapolis this season, Pearce hit .349 with 12 doubles, two triples and two homers. He has driven in eight.

The Pirates had planned to return to a five-player bench this week, and Pearce will be that extra bat. If Jeff Clement continues to struggle, Pearce could also be in line to get more than just pinch hit at-bats.

The official roster move will come on Tuesday. It could be that Brendan Donnelly (left side pain) will go on the DL. If that’s not needed, reliever Brian Bass or starter Brian Burres would likely be sent down.
