July 22: Brewers (43-53) @ Pirates (34-60); Doumit on DL

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

Ryan Doumit and Andrew McCutchen are out of the lineup tonight, though that was to be expected on both accounts. Doumit has been placed on the disabled list with a concussion. Jason Jaramillo has been called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Doumit’s spot on the roster.

GM Neal Huntington called the team’s decision to put Doumit on the DL an aggressive one. It’s not likely that Doumit would have needed 15 days to recover, but the Pirates needed a back-up catcher up here for the few days that Doumit would have been out. The team is already short a player with McCutchen on the mend.

As for McCutchen, he is scheduled to do some light throwing today for the first time. He’s also supposed to swing off a tee. There won’t be any full-blown batting practice just yet, but it is a step forward. Huntington suggested that McCutchen will likely be ready to start again when the Pirates begin their road trip on Tuesday.

A few other items of potential interest after last night’s offensive barrage:

  • The Pirates have now scored 50 runs since the All-Star break, which is tied with the Cubs for the most among all National League teams.
  • Before Wednesday, the Pirates last scored 15 runs in a 15-8 win over the Dodgers on Sept. 17, 2008.
  • The Pirates haven’t scored 10+ runs in three straight game since 1930. They can match that by reaching double figures again tonight.
  • Pittsburgh scored nine or more runs only three times in the first 89 games and now they’ve done it in four of the last five games.
