August 2: Reds (59-47) @ Pirates (36-68)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

So continues a stretch of 19 straight games against contending teams for Pittsburgh. The Pirates play the Reds six more times this season (including this series), so Pittsburgh can have at least a minimal effect on Cincinnati’s push for the Central division title. The Reds haven’t had a winning season since 2000, though that streak is surely on the way to being snapped regardless of whether there is postseason play for Cincinnati or not.

Catcher Chris Snyder has arrived and will make his Pirates debut tonight. Also, you’ll notice that Pedro Alvarez – mired in a 2-for-28 slump — is getting the night off.
