Ascanio sidelined with hand injury
Jose Ascanio has ended his rehab assignment due to a right hand injury he recently suffered in an accident in his home.
Ascanio will travel to Pittsburgh this week to be examined by hand specialist Dr. Mark Baratz. According to general manager Neal Huntington, the Pirates do not believe that the injury will cost Ascanio the rest of the season.
Having fully recovered from right shoulder surgery, Ascanio had made two Minor League rehab appearances before being sidelined with this latest injury. The good news is that Ascanio has had no issues with his surgically-repaired shoulder since returning to the mound. He pitched one inning in a Gulf Coast League game before making a two-inning appearance for High-A Bradenton (Fla.).
Back in Spring Training, Huntington estimated that Ascanio could be ready to return as early as the midway point of the season. The recovery period, however, took a bit longer than expected, and this hand injury likely strikes any possibility that Ascanio could join the Pirates before the end of the year.
