August 19: Marlins (59-60) @ Pirates (40-80)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

We’ve got present and future to deal with here. In the present, the Pirates sit an inevitable two losses away from reaching that magic No. 82. That would officially clinch an 18th straight losing season. In fact, the Pirates have now lost two of every three games played this year.

The future appears much more positive (and not just by default) after news today that the Pirates came to an agreement with another talented teenage pitcher. Sixteen-year-old Mexican right-hander Luis Heredia is your newest pitching prospect, joining Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie as this week’s additions.

Taillon will be introduced to the media in a press conference shortly. The Heredia deal — which the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting to be worth $2.6 million — is expected to be announced before the end of the day.

If that figure is correct, added up with Taillon ($6.5 million) and Allie ($2.25), the Pirates have handed out more than $11 million to three teenage right-handers in the last four days. That’s spending some money.

And now, back to the present…
