Pirates to hold mini-camp this week

Just ran into Frank Velasquez (conditioning coordinator) and Kioyshi Momose (Latin American strength and conditioning coordinator) here at the Swan & Dolphin hotel and they passed along a few interesting tidbits…

  • Both Velasquez and Momose were busy making site visits last month to check in on players’ conditioning programs. Momose spent his time in Latin America, while Velasquez stopped in cities around the US.
  • Both are leaving Orlando to travel to Bradenton, where the Pirates are holding a mini-camp/conditioning camp beginning on Tuesday. Seventeen players are expected to be in attendance. Only two (names unknown) declined the invitation to participate.
  • The Pirates are going to hold another mini-camp in Bradenton in January, though this one will be much more conditioning-oriented than in recent years, when it marked the beginning of pitchers’ throwing programs.
