J. Rodriguez likely Rule 5 pick
The Rule 5 Draft will begin shortly, with the Pirates making pick No. 1 as a result of having the worst record last year. It appears as if shortstop Josh Rodriguez is Pittsburgh’s likely selection.
Rodriguez, who was left unprotected by the Indians, spent most of last season in Triple-A. Though he’s listed as a shortstop, he has also logged time at second, third and in the outfield. Taking Rodriguez would give Pittsburgh the backup middle infielder it currently lacks. Essentially, it would be insurance in case the Pirates cannot find someone to supplant Ronny Cedeno.
Rodriguez, 25, hit .293 with 12 homers, 23 doubles and 46 RBIs in Triple-A Columbus last season. He is a former second-round Draft pick from 2006.
