Arquimedes Lorenzo, a right-handed pitcher on the Pirates’ Dominican Summer League team, has been suspended 50 games for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Lorenzo, 19, will begin serving that suspension at the start of next season.

The Pirates signed Lorenzo as a non-drafted free agent on Nov. 11, 2009. He made his professional debut with the DSL Pirates last season and started 13 games. He finished 2-4 with a 6.56 ERA in 48 innings. Lorenzo struck out 26 and walked 30. Opponents hit .257 against him.
