Some roster clarity

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

For those who have been predicting for weeks now what the Pirates’ Opening Day roster will look like, know that everything is finally shaking into place. After four more cuts on Saturday (Brian Burres, Andy Marte, Corey Wimberly and Dusty Brown were reassigned to Minor League camp), the Pirates now have 32 players remaining in camp. Of those 32, just 25 will go north to Chicago.

There are still some decisions to be made, but let’s take a look at who’s in, who’s going to be out and who’s still fighting for a spot:

PITCHERS (17)

Who’s in:

  • Kevin Correia (SP)
  • Paul Maholm (SP)
  • Ross Ohlendorf (SP)
  • Charlie Morton (SP)
  • James McDonald (SP)
  • Joel Hanrahan (RP)
  • Evan Meek (RP)
  • Chris Resop (RP)
  • Jose Veras (RP)
  • Jeff Karstens (RP)

Who’s going to be out:

  • Brad Lincoln (SP): He has not returned to the mound since getting hit by a line drive on March 18
  • Jose Ascanio (RP): He appeared in his first Minor League game this week after dealing with elbow discomfort
  • Joe Beimel (RP): Two arm setbacks have left Beimel needing a bit more time to get ready for the season
  • Scott Olsen (RP): The lefty will keep trying to build up his arm strength after missing time with hamstring strain

Who’s still fighting:

  • Garrett Olson (RP): He has a good chance to be in the bullpen given that there are no other left-handed options
  • Michael Crotta (RP): The righty has been one of camp’s surprises and has allowed one earned run in 11 innings
  • Chris Leroux (RP): He has also pitched well this spring and is already on the 40-man roster

CATCHERS (3)

Who’s in:

  • Chris Snyder: This could very well change if Snyder has to open the year on the DL because of back soreness
  • Ryan Doumit: He will be Snyder’s backup, but could be thrust into a starting role if Snyder is out

Who’s still fighting:

  • Jason Jaramillo: He’ll make the team if A) Snyder starts the year on the DL or B) The Pirates opt to carry three catchers. He won’t if Snyder is good to go and the club decides to give the final bench spot to another position player

INFIELDERS (7)

Who’s in:

  • Lyle Overbay (1B)
  • Neil Walker (2B)
  • Ronny Cedeno (SS)
  • Pedro Alvarez (3B)
  • Steve Pearce (1B/3B/RF/LF)

Who’s still fighting:

  • Pedro Ciriaco (2B/SS/3B/CF): If the Pirates value defense when they choose a middle infield backup, Ciriaco will be the guy
  • Josh Rodriguez (2B/SS/3B): He’s shown an ability to hit, but he’s not as strong a defender as Ciriaco. But as a Rule 5 guy, Rodriguez would have to be offered back to the Indians if the Pirates don’t keep him

OUTFIELDERS (5)

Who’s in:

  • Jose Tabata (LF)
  • Andrew McCutchen (CF)
  • Matt Diaz (RF)
  • Garrett Jones (RF)

Who’s still fighting:

  • John Bowker (RF/LF/1B): Bowker has hit well and is out of options; both of those are giving him a strong case for a bench spot
