Even more roster clarity
Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com
I tried to bring you up to speed yesterday on the roster situation, which ended up being cleared up even more today. Essentially, the Pirates only have one more decision to make and that is which two of the three on-the-fence relievers (Mike Crotta, Garrett Olson and Chris Leroux) will be in the Opening Day bullpen.
Here’s a look at where things stand as of late Sunday afternoon:
PITCHERS (17)
Who’s in:
- Kevin Correia (SP)
- Paul Maholm (SP)
- Ross Ohlendorf (SP)
- Charlie Morton (SP)
- James McDonald (SP)
- Joel Hanrahan (RP)
- Evan Meek (RP)
- Chris Resop (RP)
- Jose Veras (RP)
- Jeff Karstens (RP)
Who’s going to be out:
- Brad Lincoln (SP): He has not returned to the mound since getting hit by a line drive on March 18
- Jose Ascanio (RP): He appeared in his first Minor League game this week after dealing with elbow discomfort
- Joe Beimel (RP): Two arm setbacks have left Beimel needing a bit more time to get ready for the season
- Scott Olsen (RP): The lefty will keep trying to build up his arm strength after missing time with hamstring strain
Who’s still fighting:
- Garrett Olson (RP): He has a good chance to be in the bullpen given that there are no other left-handed options
- Michael Crotta (RP): The righty has been one of camp’s surprises and has allowed one earned run in 11 innings
- Chris Leroux (RP): He has also pitched well this spring and is already on the 40-man roster
CATCHERS (3)
Who’s in:
- Ryan Doumit
- Jason Jaramillo
Who’s out:
- Chris Snyder: He is “very probable” to start year on DL, said GM Neal Huntington
