Tabata arrives in Pittsburgh

UPDATE: Tabata arrived in Pittsburgh on Monday, but the Pirates are not going to activate him from the DL before tonight’s game. Earlier this afternoon, the Pirates’ official game notes had mistakenly listed him as having been recalled today.

Tabata is in Pittsburgh as part of  a “medical checkpoint review,” manager Clint Hurdle said. The biggest thing is that the Pirates want to see Tabata’s mobility and make sure he looks fully healthy. I spoke to Tabata, who says he feels “ready to go.” He said he plans to hit in the batting cage and do some exercises today.

The weather could mess up some of the Pirates’ plans, as it is currently raining and is expected to throughout the afternoon/evening. The Pirates are not going to send Tabata onto a soggy field to run.

Tabata said he was told he should be ready to return to the field on Tuesday. Obviously, he is not the one making the decisions, but it would make sense that he would be ready to go after passing this final checkpoint.

Jose Tabata has left the Triple-A Indianapolis club to return to Pittsburgh, and he is expected to be activated off the disabled list when he arrives. The Pirates have not yet made the roster move.

Tabata has been on the DL with a left quad strain since late June. He played in nine rehab games with Indianapolis and had 11 hits in 33 at-bats. Six of Tabata’s hits went for extra bases.

The Pirates are likely to send to down either Steve Pearce or Pedro Alvarez upon Tabata’s arrival. Both have struggled mightily since returning from their own DL stints. Neither is in Monday’s starting lineup, which was just posted a few minutes ago.

Chase d’Arnaud and Alex Presley, both of whom are playing in rehab games with Indianapolis, remain with the Triple-A club for the time being.
