Bucs offer arbitration to Lee

The Pirates have officially offered arbitration to Type B free agent Derrek Lee, while opting not to do the same with free agents Ryan Ludwick and Chris Snyder.

By offering arbitration to Lee, the Pirates will get a compensation Draft pick if Lee signs with another club this offseason. That Draft pick would fall between the first and second round. Lee also has the option of accepting the arbitration offer and agreeing to a one-year deal with the Pirates. It’s unlikely that the veteran first baseman will go this route.

Lee has until midnight on Dec. 7 to accept or reject the Pirates’ arbitration offer.

The Pirates are already guaranteed a compensatory pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft since Ryan Doumit inked a one-year deal with the Twins this week. Doumit was also a Type B free agent.

By declining to offer arbitration to Ludwick and Snyder, the Pirates lose the opportunity to pick up two additional Draft picks. However, it also eliminates the risk of either player accepting the offer and putting the Pirates in a position where they have no choice but to carry that player under a one-year contract in 2012.
