Arbitration deadline looming
Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com
Remember that midnight tonight is the deadline for teams to tender contracts to players who are eligible for arbitration. A player is eligible for arbitration after he accrues between 3-6 years of service time. There is also a group of so-called Super Two players who get an extra year of arbitration eligibility because their service time is among the highest of players with between 2-3 years. Garrett Jones is one player who falls into this category this year.
Anyways, what matter is this: The Pirates have eight players who are eligible for arbitration. For each player who is tendered a contract, the Pirates are accepting the possibility that an arbitration hearing might be necessary. However, before going before an arbiter, the two sides do have a chance to work out their own agreement.
If a player is not tendered a contract, he becomes a free agent.
I do not expect the Pirates to tender contracts to all eight of the following players, particularly given the number of relievers on this list. The list includes:
- Jason Grilli
- Joel Hanrahan
- Garrett Jones
- Jeff Karstens
- Evan Meek
- Charlie Morton
- Chris Resop
- Jose Veras
Stay tuned for an official announcement later in the day.

First of all Jenifer I want to wish you all the best in your upcoming venture!! ” GOOD LUCK”!! Second I hope that the Pirates come to terms with Evan Meek. He is so very special to me. I was hoping to see him at the Pirate Fest but he wasn’t scheduled to be there! Anyway I do have a question to ask you. Does Evan have a twitter account? I would like to be one of his followers but I don’t know how to go about it!! Can you check this out for me and give me some feedback?? I would very much appreciate it!! Thanks!!
Evan does have a Twitter account. It is @meeker47.
Thanks Jenifer!! Do I Have to go through Pirates.com or can I just reach him at Evan@ meeker47.com?
@meeker 47 is simply Evan’s Twitter handle. You can follow him on Twitter by searching for him that way. That is not his email address so don’t add a .com to the end of it.
