Day 31: Cardinals @ Astros

Kyle Lohse will make his fourth start of the spring today, putting him in position to take the mound as many as six times in Grapefruit League play. Asked this morning if Lohse would indeed make all six starts — or cut back to five — manager Mike Matheny said that decision is still part of a “juggling act.”

Back in Jupiter, Allen Craig (right knee surgery) is expected to get his first game at-bats today — in a Minor League game. Minor League games are built for flexibility. In other words, if the Cardinals want Craig to lead off every inning, not play the field and not run to first after he puts a ball in play, they can have him do so. It’s another reason why you should always read very little into spring game results.

Speaking of Minor League camp, Robert Stock, who is in the process of converting from catcher to pitcher, made a two-inning appearance in a game Sunday. He walked three, struck out two and did not allow a hit or run. … Yesterday, Tyrell Jenkins pitched three scoreless innings in a Minors game.

Today’s lineup is posted below, and you’ll notice that after yesterday’s DH confusion, the Cardinals get to employ one on Tuesday. It’s a Take 2 for Bryan Anderson. Also, you’ll see that Daniel Descalso is at third, while Tyler Greene gets the start at second. Matheny has been consistent in giving Greene more second base opportunities than Descalso because Greene has less experience there.
