May 30: Cardinals (27-23) @ Braves (27-24)

Carlos Beltran (right knee soreness) and David Freese (right wrist soreness) are both out of the lineup today, likely much to the delight of Braves starter Tim Hudson. As a result, catcher Yadier Molina has been bumped up to the cleanup spot. It marks the 13th time in his career that he has started and hit fourth.

Injury news abounded this afternoon. On the encouraging front, the expectation is still that Allen Craig will come off the disabled list on Friday. He continues to go through full pregame work, and his left hamstring passed all the running tests the club put Craig through today.

Progress isn’t coming along so well for Jon Jay, who will have his shoulder re-examined on Thursday. No word yet on the results of that second opinion. Jay, who first sprained the shoulder in mid-April, has not felt improvement during this recent period of rest.

And it was announced today that Jaime Garcia will skip his scheduled start on Friday because of left elbow discomfort. The good news is that Garcia, after traveling back to St. Louis, underwent an MRI on Wednesday and no damage was detected. As a result, the Cardinals are pushing up all four of their other starters a day (that can be done because of Thursday’s off day) and then will slot Garcia in to pitch next on Tuesday, June 5.

For now, no roster move is being considered.

Much more on all of these injuries coming later in the cardinals.com notebook.
