It’s going to be a long day for the Cardinals, who begin with a quick night game-day game turnaround to wrap up this series in New York. For those not able to get the FSN-Midwest broadcast, don’t forget that you can watch this afternoon affair on MLB Network.

Then tonight, the Cardinals will make five selections in the first round and compensation round of the First-Year Player Draft. That’s five out of the first 59 selections, a volume of picks unmatched by any other club. Written last week, this Cardinals Draft preview gives you a glimpse of the organization’s preparation and strategies.

Manager Mike Matheny didn’t understate the importance of these early picks, either, saying on Monday: “It’s a big day for the Cardinals. It’s probably the biggest Draft in the history of the Draft for the Cardinals, with that many high picks. It’s a big day.”

Matheny’s son, Tate, is expected to be drafted out of Westminster Christian Academy, though not in the first round.

Several other items of note to pass along as the Mets’ groundscrew is removing the tarp:

  • Jaime Garcia will be arriving in Houston today before the rest of the team, and he is set to pitch on Tuesday. While the Cardinals will obviously monitor Garcia’s elbow tomorrow, Garcia will not enter the start with preset limitations.
  • For the second time on this roadtrip, Yadier Molina will bat cleanup. Said Matheny: “He had been swinging it exceptionally well, and we are trying to find something that will work a little different.”
  • The decision not to try Carlos Beltran again in center field since Friday has not been tied to soggy conditions presented by various rain storms this weekend. Rather, it’s all about giving him the opportunity to play while trying to minimize the pressure put on his right knee. That knee continues to give Beltran trouble. “To throw him into center field and expect him to be able play that position right and how he wants to is a tall order,” Matheny said. “He’s kind of grinding right now.”
  • Shane Robinson, who sat with a migraine on Sunday, is doing better and available to play on Monday.
