June 14: White Sox (34-28) @ Cardinals (32-31)

The most obvious absence in the lineup today is Carlos Beltran, who spent part of last night in the emergency room, battling a stomach virus. Beltran has been sick for three days now, though he talked his way into the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Cardinals were certainly glad he did last night, as Beltran had three of the team’s four hits — including a homer — in the 1-0 win.

Beltran returned home after the game and later drove to the ER as stomach pain increased, manager Mike Matheny said. Beltran is at Busch Stadium today but staying away from almost everyone. Whether or not he’s available to pinch hit will be determined by whether there has been some improvement in his condition this afternoon.

With Beltran sitting, Daniel Descalso get his turn at hitting second. It’ll be the fourth start he’s made at that spot in the order this year.

Both Skip Schumaker (right hamstring strain) and Matt Carpenter (right oblique strain) will be in the Triple-A Memphis lineup tonight. General manager John Mozeliak said he expects the two to be ready to rejoin the big league club on the team’s upcoming road trip. That begins next Tuesday. Jon Jay continues to do baseball activities — throwing, running — but he remains still a ways out from a rehab assignment.
