June 16: Royals (28-34) @ Cardinals (33-32)

Perhaps surprising to some, a day later manager Mike Matheny still had no issue with Alan Porter’s out call to end Friday’s one-run loss. Not only do replays appear inconclusive — I’ve watched several times and still see nothing definitive — but Matheny can’t help but look at the play from the perspective of the catcher. He had this to add on Saturday, after watching additional replays:

“You have to look at it from multiple angles, and we’re watching it slow. You can’t expect anything better than what he’s seeing in real life. I know as a catcher, I see he has the plate blocked. If there is contact made and he comes up with the ball, you’re out. That’s been baseball forever. He did a nice job blocking the plate. If he hit his leg like he did and they called him safe, even though he tagged him high, [Royals manager] Ned [Yost] is going to go ballistic and so would I.”

If you haven’t seen the play already, you can see video of it here.

The quick night game-day game turnaround didn’t keep the Cardinals from taking on-field batting practice this morning. And joining them was Stephen Piscotty, one of three players the Cardinals selected in the Draft’s compensation round. Piscotty joined in for BP and spent some time with infield coach Jose Oquendo before going to sign his professional contract.

Piscotty will head to low-A Quad Cities, where he will be the team’s everyday third baseman. This marked the third straight day that the Cardinals have had a Draft pick join them during pregame work.

On the injury front:

Jon Jay hit off soft toss for the second straight day. He is hopeful of taking batting practice in the indoor cage on Sunday… The Cardinals anticipate Skip Schumaker joining the club in Detroit next week. Schumaker is currently on rehab with Triple-A Memphis. … Matt Carpenter is in Memphis, too, though his return will likely be a few days after Schumaker’s.

Umpires give in to Royals manager and take triple play away from Kelly. KC,s run that inning should be unearned with the error on home plate umpire. Talk about an unprofessional umpire, that is sure one behind the plate today.

I know I’m commenting on the wrong thread, but I just want to say that I think its a crime that Yadi is not starting the All Star game at catcher. In my humble opinion, he is the best catcher in baseball, offensively and defensively and I don’t even live in the St Louis area. Admittedly, I am a long time fan.
