Schumaker activated off DL; Cleto optioned
Skip Schumaker will rejoin the Cardinals in Detroit for the start of the team’s three-game Interleague series on Tuesday. To make room on the 25-man roster for Schumaker, reliever Maikel Cleto has been optioned back to Triple-A Memphis.
Schumaker has been on the disabled list since May 31, the result of a right hamstring strain he suffered while chasing after a ball in the outfield during the club’s recent series in Atlanta. Expected to miss two-to-four weeks as a result of the injury, Schumaker ended up being on the shorter end of that window.
He wrapped up a rehab assignment with Memphis on Sunday. In three Triple-A games, Schumaker went 3-for-8. He played both in the outfield
The addition of Schumaker gives manager Mike Matheny another option at center field, where Shane Robinson, Adron Chambers and Carlos Beltran have all been spliting playing time. Starting center fielder Jon Jay is still on the disabled list recovering from a right shoulder sprain, which he sustained in April.
By sending out Cleto, the Cardinals return to a more traditional roster split of seven relievers, 13 position players. The club had been using a 13-man bullpen since June 9.
Cleto, who was called up from the Minors when Schumaker went on the DL, ended up making five appearances for the Cardinals. In four innings, the right-hander allowed three earned runs on nine hits.
