All-Star Sunday recap and links

All-Star Sunday always turns out to be one of the busier days of the year at the ballpark. But it’s also one of the more anticipated by those in the clubhouse. Today, four Cardinal players — Carlos Beltran, Rafael Furcal, Yadier Molina and Lance Lynn — learned during a pregame meeting, held by manager Mike Matheny, that they would be representing the organization in Kansas City next week.

Beltran and Furcal were named starters by winning the fan vote. Molina and Lynn were elected through the player ballot. Former Cardinal manager Tony La Russa filled in the last few roster spots but added no other Cardinals. He did say on Sunday, though, that Matt Holliday received strong consideration.

“Matt Holliday was one that has really been hot and is having another really good year,” La Russa said. “It was tough leaving him out, especially since we have history.”

Holliday could still find his way onto the roster, as injuries always open up a few spots. That roster clarity will come over the next few days.

Also set to make a push for an All-Star invite is David Freese, though his selection lies in the hands of fans. Freese is one of five NL players (the others: Chipper Jones, Aaron Hill, Bryce Harper and Michael Bourn) in the Final Vote competition. Voting for this can be done on MLB.com or via text messaging.

We also learned on Sunday that Beltran will be participating in his first Home Run Derby. You don’t have to go back far to find the Cardinals’ last participant — that was Holliday, one year ago.
