July 3: Rockies (30-49) @ Cardinals (42-38)

You likely have already read the news, but in case you’re just tuning in, it was announced today that Chris Carpenter would be undergoing season-ending surgery on July 19. Those who read the blog on Monday likely aren’t shocked by this development, as I suggested some ominous news was coming based on yesterday’s developments.

Perspective can be powerful, though, and the Cardinals know what they did without their other co-ace in 2011. That has to help in light of this news. The certainty of surgery also helps GM John Mozeliak better identify his priorities leading up to the Trade Deadline. Let’s be clear — the No. 1 need now is starting pitching.

More on that on cardinals.com later in the day.

In other news, reliever Kyle McClellan began his four-week throwing program today with a session of long toss. Also, David Freese’s chances of going to the All-Star Game next week just got a bit better. Earlier in the day it was announced that Freese was in second place, behind Chipper Jones, in the Final Vote competition. Jones has since been named to the All-Star team as a replacement for Matt Kemp, meaning Freese is now the Final Vote leader.

This is such sad news. Wonder if he will ever pitch again?’

Beltran is best trade bait for a starting pitcher in AL.he would be great DH,but where will he play when Berkman comes back?
