July 27: Cardinals (53-46) @ Cubs (40-57)

Lance Berkman returns to the lineup after two days on the bench. That absence, of course, was due to the bone bruise Berkman sustained when hit by a pitch on his right knee in Tuesday’s game. David Freese and Carlos Beltran are not starting, though both are available on the bench.

Freese is still dealing with some right calf soreness. He exited Thursday’s game with what was described as a calf cramp, though cramps typically don’t last this long — so perhaps a mild strain would be a better label. Regardless, Freese said he expects to start tomorrow.

Beltran insists that he is not dealing with any injury, though manager Mike Matheny said he felt Beltran was “really fighting” on Wednesday and wanted to “invest in the future” by giving Beltran back-to-back days off. Matheny added that it’s not so much Beltran’s swing that he was worried about, but rather the durability of the outfielder’s body.
