August 6: Giants (59-49) @ Cardinals (59-49)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

The Giants are in town for a four-game series… and check out their record (which is listed above). It’s identical to that of the Cardinals. San Francisco’s focus right now is on holding off the Dodgers for the NL West division title. But depending on how things shake out in that division (and the Central), there’s a chance the Cards and Giants will later find themselves fighting for the same wild card spot.

The more wins the Cardinals can earn in this series, the better they set themselves up for that push for a postseason spot later.

St. Louis has won 12 of its last 16 and nine of 10 at home since the All-Star break.

I read about the status of garcia and his own , doubt about his readiness to return to the mound as a starting pitcher. I believe the Cardinals need to NOT change the starting rotation as it is now, Kelly is doing a good job. Instead of placing Garcia into a starting role, I suggest he be placed in the bullpen and used in relief. Once Matheny and the pitching staff are confident he is back to a level of a starting pitcher, then use him in strategic situations to releave a regular starter. A plus the Cardinals will have come Sept., is to to bring some of the other pitchers, along with Robinson, Hamilton, Gast,Teveres, etc to St Louis.

Kelly throws too many pitches and has too high of a WHIP to keep up whatever success he has had to this point. If Jaime’s healthy, I’d rather him in the rotation.
