August 14: D-backs (58-57) @ Cardinals (62-53)

Jenifer Langosch/

Updating earlier news that the Cardinals placed LHP Brian Fuentes on the restricted list: Manager Mike Matheny said this afternoon that the club received no indication from Fuentes that he will be back this season. Matheny said that Fuentes called him on Monday to tell him that he needed to return to California to take care of a family matter. The nature of that family situation was not told to the organization.

That means the Cardinals will carry on with two lefties — Marc Rzepczynski and Barret Browning — and the addition of another right-hander, Trevor Rosenthal. Monday’s off-day also did wonders to a bullpen that was worked hard in Sunday’s extra-inning loss. Everyone should be available today.

Little other news to pass on from the Cardinals’ clubhouse, though keep in mind that lefty Jaime Garcia is set to make his fourth Minor League rehab start tonight. He will be pitching for Triple-A Memphis, and, if you’re interested, you can follow along here. The Cardinals still haven’t announced their plans on whose rotation spot Garcia will take when he returns.

Here are lineups in the first game of a nine-game homestand for the Cardinals. The first six games will be played against playoff contenders Arizona and Pittsburgh.
