August 17: Pirates (65-53) @ Cardinals (64-54)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

Whether anyone in the Cardinals’ clubhouse defines it as such or not, this is a big series. That’s because not only can the Cardinals control what they do, but they can can control what the Pirates do, as well. The clubs have six head-to-head games remaining this season. Three this weekend at Busch Stadium. And another three at PNC Park near the end of the month. Heading into tonight’s game, the Pirates hold a one-game lead over St. Louis for the second Wild Card spot.

While Pittsburgh will be without Neil Walker (dislocated pinkie) tonight, the Cardinals will not have Yadier Molina (back tightness) again. Molina seemed encouraged by how much better he felt today, as opposed to yesterday, but he’s still feeling a pinch in his middle back. He is hopeful of playing this weekend — but Molina did not go so far as to say it is a certainty.

Also of note, Lance Berkman said the plan is for him to begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Aug. 22. He anticipates being there for about a week, though the timing would suggest that the Cardinals will wait until rosters expand on Sept. 1 to activate him. That would eliminate one roster move.
