Freeman recalled; Berkman activated

The Cardinals added two players to their roster on Saturday. Lance Berkman, as expected, came off the disabled list, where he was placed while nursing a knee injury. Also joining the club in DC is lefty Sam Freeman.

The Cardinals’ bullpen has been called upon to handle a lot of work in recent days, so Freeman’s arrival gives the club another available bullpen arm. He also gives the team a second lefty option out of the ‘pen.

Freeman made 13 appearances for the Cardinals during a June stint with the club. He missed some time with a strained oblique during August but came back on Tuesday and has made two appearances since. In 27 outings for Triple-A Memphis this year, Freeman has a 2.08 ERA.

The Cardinals likely won’t get many starts out of Berkman the rest of the way, but he will be a potentially potent bat off the bench. Berkman went 3-for-17 with three walks during a recent Minor League rehab stint with Memphis. He has been on the DL three different times this year, therefore limiting him to only 75 at-bats with the Cardinals.

Is anyone besides me tired of watching the Cards? I get irritated watching Matheny stand on the steps with the “deer in the headlight” look while the team falls farther and farther behind. What is with the management? They keep bringing players that cannot hold out for an entire season and bringing up players that have been on the dl in the minor league.
