September 13: Cardinals (75-68) @ Dodgers (74-69)

Jenifer Langosch/

A pair of free-falling clubs will meet at Dodger Stadium over the next four days in a series that could have serious Wild Card implications. One of the two teams — both of which enter with three-game losing streaks — is guaranteed to win each night. Too many LA wins and the Cardinals will find themselves looking up in the Wild Card standings. On the other hand, this is St. Louis’ chance to push the Dodgers further behind.

All the while, keep an eye on the teams creeping up from behind. Though the Pirates remain stagnant, Milwaukee and Philadelphia are rising quickly.

Also, remember that the season record between these two teams could come into play at the most crucial of times. If the Dodgers and Cardinals were to tie for the second Wild Card spot, they would play each other in a one-game tiebreaker game to determine who would face the top Wild Card winner (presumably, Atlanta). Home-field advantage for that play-in game would be determined by head-to-head record.

Currently, LA leads the season series 4-3. The Dodgers swept the Cardinals in a three-game series here in May. The Cardinals won three of four during the Dodgers’ visit to Missouri in July. That means the Cardinals must win at least three of these four games to secure home-field advantage in a potential tiebreaker game.
