September 14: Cardinals (76-68) @ Dodgers (74-70)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

Dodger Stadium will be Joe Kelly’s stage tonight, and he estimates he’ll have 150 friends and family will be here to watch him make his first start in LA. Kelly grew up in nearby Anaheim, where he openly rooted against the Dodgers. For more on Kelly’s thoughts about the start, take a look here.

There will be the surprising middle infield combo of Matt Carpenter and Pete Kozma playing behind Kelly. The Cardinals have talked about Carpenter’s potential as a second baseman, but count me among the surprised to see him playing there at this point in this season. Manager Mike Matheny wants his bat in the lineup, for obvious reasons.

Remember that the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate is playing for the Texas League championship tonight against Frisco (Texas). With a 2-0 lead in the series, Springfield needs to win just one of the next three games. You can follow along with tonight’s game here.
