October 1: Reds (96-63) @ Cardinals (86-73)

It’s the final series of the regular season and the Cardinals hold their destiny in their own hands. With a win over the Reds and a Giants win over LA tonight, the Cardinals will clinch the second NL Wild Card. Anything less than that the race continues for at least another day.

The Dodgers have won five in a row, and if they continue to win, the Cardinals will need to win two of their last three games to advance to the Wild Card game on Friday. And as a reminder, if the Dodgers come back to tie the Cardinals for the second Wild Card, a tie-breaker game would be played in LA on Thursday. The Dodgers earned the chance to host that game by virtue of their head-to-head record against the Cards this year.

As for tonight, the Cardinals continue running their “A” lineup out there until they know they are in the playoffs. David Freese’s right ankle responded sufficiently enough after yesterday’s game that he is back in the lineup tonight.
