World Baseball Classic rosters to be unveiled Thursday

Jenifer Langosch/

It was announced last month that three Cardinals players — Yadier Molina (Puerto Rico), Carlos Beltran (Puerto Rico) and Jaime Garcia (Mexico) — had committed to participate in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, which will take place from March 2-19.

That contingent of Cardinal participants, however, is expected to soon grow.

Full provisional rosters for each of the 16 teams participating in the Classic are set to be released on Thursday during a pair of MLB Network programs. At 9 a.m. CT, MLB Network will announce Team USA’s roster. Then, during a 3 p.m. CT show, MLB Network will reveal the rosters for the other Classic clubs.

And as is noted in the player eligibility section, Major League clubs are allowed to cap their number of Classic participants, if they so wish: “WBCI will not approve a player’s participation in the Qualifying Round if such participation would cause a Major League Club to have more than 14 players from its organization, or more than 10 of its players who were on any Major League Baseball Club’s Major League Active or Disabled List as of August 31, 2012, participate in the Qualifying Round, unless the Major League Club informs WBCI in writing that it has no objection to allowing additional players to participate.”
