Boggs named to Team USA’s WBC roster
Team USA, one of 16 teams poised to compete in the World Baseball Classic tournament in March, has selected Cardinals right-hander Mitchell Boggs to be a piece of its 14-member pitching staff.
Boggs, 28, was the only member of the Cardinals’ organization selected to play for the US team, which unveiled its provisional roster on Thursday morning. This will be Boggs’ first time representing his country in international play.
Boggs led the Cardinals with 78 appearances in 2012 and finished with a league-best 34 Holds. He made most of his appearances as the team’s eighth-inning set-up man.
As a Classic participant this spring, Boggs will leave the Cardinals’ Spring Training facility in Jupiter, Fla., and join his fellow US teammates in Phoenix, Ariz., before the opening round of Classic play. Team USA is in a bracket with Canada, Mexico and Italy. The entire tournament runs from March 2 to March 19.
Boggs will return to Cardinals camp at the conclusion of the three-week event or when Team USA is eliminated, whichever comes first.
Roster for the 15 other teams participating in the international competition will be announced at 3 p.m. CT on an MLB Network show that will also stream live on MLB.com. The Cardinals are expected to be well represented on these world rosters.
Last month, Yadier Molina and Carlos Beltran confirmed their participation with Team Puerto Rico. Starter Jaime Garcia had also committed to play for Team Mexico, those his availability will depend upon the status of his left shoulder.
