Feb. 25: Q of the Day
With Chris Carpenter’s absence and Shelby Miller’s recent injury, have the Cardinals considered finding a starting pitcher outside the organization? And is Miller expected to rebound quickly?
— Charles S., Houston
Miller has already rebounded quickly and is actually scheduled to throw live batting practice later this morning. Assuming all goes well during that session, Miller should be cleared to pitch in a Grapefruit League game later this week. As mentioned at the time, Miller’s setback was always characterized as minor. I understand that there is often a rush to assume the worst, but there never seemed to be a reason to expect Miller to be out long.
With Miller back on track, the Cardinals maintain that they are content with their starting pitching depth. Carpenter’s loss will sting, but assuming no other pitcher goes down, the Cardinals have four returning starters (Adam Wainwright, Jake Westbrook, Jaime Garcia, Lance Lynn) and a pool of three (Miller, Joe Kelly, Trevor Rosenthal) to fill the last spot.
