March 1: Q of the Day
Greg Garcia and Kolten Wong played together as a shortstop and second baseman throughout college and in the Minors. Is it possible that the Cardinals bring them up to be a long-term, middle-infield combination in the Majors?

Wong certainly seems to profile as a player who could be a long-term fit at second base for the Cardinals in the not-too-distant future. He has an impressive offensive pedigree, and the Cardinals have been encouraged by the defensive improvements made in the last year. The Cardinals seem to be constantly sorting out their situation at second, so Wong would offer some much-desired stability.
Garcia, however, is not necessarily viewed as such a sure everyday fit in the Majors. There are questions about whether he has the arm to stick at short in the Majors. It seems more likely that Garcia would profile as a utility player at the big league level. Garcia has played both second and short in the Minors and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him bounce between positions this year (depending on the makeup of the club he’s on) to keep versatility as an asset.
When it comes to a long-term answer at short, the Cardinals just don’t seem to have one in the organization as of yet. Look for it to be an area the club makes a priority to address this winter — if not sooner, depending on Rafael Furcal’s status.
