What is the difference between a pitcher’s “side session” and a “bullpen session”?
– Sue M.
Essentially, it is all just semantics. The two phrases are interchangeable and refer to when a pitcher is throwing (off the mound) on the side. Usually this happens in the bullpen, which is why the you’ll hear ‘bullpen session’ used to describe the activity.
Starting pitchers will throw a bullpen/side session in between starts. Here in Spring Training, you’ll often hear about bullpen/side sessions because it’s the way in which pitchers build their arms up before Grapefruit League games begin.
