March 9: Q of the Day

Has there been any talk of shifting Daniel Descalso to shortstop and having Matt Carpenter play second base?
– Tom G., Provo, Utah
In terms of an everyday set-up, no, the Cardinals do not envision going with Descalso at short and Carpenter at second. The Cardinals are content with what Kozma can do defensively at the shortstop position and therefore want to give him the first opportunity to start there. Descalso hasn’t been ruled out as a backup option, but it doesn’t sound like the Cardinals are interested in using him there regularly. He has yet to make a spring appearance at short.
As for the second base situation, the Cardinals have not yet offered any clarity about how playing time will be divvied up between Descalso and Carpenter. The pair continue to split time there this spring.
