Day 43: Cardinals @ Twins

Jenifer Langosch/

The team bus left for Fort Myers early this morning, carrying on it both Shelby Miller and Joe Kelly, among others. The fifth starter competition — whether a resolution is announced or not — comes to an end today, as this is the last spring game for both right-handers.

Back here in Jupiter, several of the team’s starting position players stayed behind to get some work in. Carlos Beltran (broken right toe) has been hitting in the batting cages this morning, and David Freese (lower back injury) is being re-examined so that the team can get a better idea of how long the third baseman might be sidelined. Before leaving to join the club in Fort Myers, general manager John Mozeliak said that the club was encouraged by the results of Freese’s MRI this morning. Freese is expected to receive an anti-inflammatory shot within the next day or two, and he has not been ruled out for Opening Day — which sits a week away.

Check this afternoon for further updates on both players.

And over in the By Gosh Bracket Challenge, it looks like Germy2323 has a hold on the lead through the first weekend of games. All four of his/her Final Four teams are alive still, too, which is more than I can say about my picks.
