Day 46: Marlins @ Cardinals

Jenifer Langosch/

Within the next half hour, the Cardinals will hold a press conference to announce Adam Wainwright’s five-year extension. If you missed the news yesterday, here is the news story. You can look for a fresh story on later today that will go into detail about what this extension means for Wainwright’s legacy in St. Louis and how it establishes the righty as a long-term leader on the pitching staff.

These negotiations were a priority for the Cardinals this spring; and now neither side will have to deal with persistent questions throughout the season about Wainwright’s potential departure. Reports put the value of the five-year extension at around $100 million. An annual average salary of about $20 million is certainly market value for a pitcher with Wainwright’s credentials. Could he have gotten more or a longer deal had he tested the free-agency waters? Most likely. But it seemed all along that Wainwright’s biggest priority wasn’t squeezing every dollar he could out of the team but rather just ensuring that he was compensated fairly according to the market already established.

Too bad #5 didn’t have the same values as #50. Adam, thanx for putting your team first after your family. The Cardinal family appreciates your decision.
