April 3: Cardinals (1-1) @ D-backs (1-1)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

The Cardinals will wrap up a three-game series in Arizona tonight, after which the team will fly to San Francisco for the second leg of this road trip. In the meantime, third baseman David Freese is in transit to Memphis, where he’ll begin a Minor League rehab assignment on Thursday. This is a change of plans for the Cardinals, who, as of yesterday, said the intention was for Freese to get at-bats in extended Spring Training games.

Memphis opens its season on Thursday, meaning Freese could play in as many as four games before returning to St. Louis for Monday’s home opener.

As for today’s game, Matt Adams gets his first start of the season as Carlos Beltran sits. Allen Craig slides into the outfield. Expect this to be manager Mike Matheny’s go-to scenario on the days that Beltran is on the bench. Also, Pete Kozma — who connected for a 400+ foot homer last night — inches up a spot in the batting order.

Almost full strength. Give me Carp at 2nd, Freeze at 3rd, and I am a happy camper.. DD (lefty), Sugar (righty) and Carlos (switch) off the bench. If we ever have too many hits and runs with that lineup/strategy, we can return to Carlos on a full time basis. Or better yet, if/when Carlos starts hitting like he did this time last year, he gets the next start.

We still need a shortstop!
