April 5: Cardinals (1-2) @ Giants (2-1)

Welcome back to San Francisco, the site of some not-so-pleasant recent memories for the Cardinals and their fans. And if the sting of last October wasn’t enough, the Cardinals get to relive it today. This just so happens to be the Giants’ home opener, and it will double as a celebration of their 2012 playoff run, which ended with a Championship.

If you missed it yesterday, here is a full story about the NLCS rematch, with comments from manager Mike Matheny and several players about the unfortunate timing of their visit here this season.

Speaking of Opening Days, the Cardinals released information about Monday’s home opener festivities. You can find those details here.

You’ll see another switcheroo in the lineup today, with Carlos Beltran and Matt Carpenter swapping spots. Matheny has said he won’t be tied to a particular order this year and he’s acted on that promise this week. In four games, he has used three different batting orders.

Rain washed out Triple-A Memphis’ season opener on Thursday — and that also cost David Freese the chance to begin his rehab assignment. Memphis will now open its season with a doubleheader later today. Freese is expected to play in the opener, but he won’t be playing every inning of both games. Both Freese and the Cardinals are still hopeful that Freese (lower back injury) will be activated off the DL on Monday.
