April 9: Reds (5-2) @ Cardinals (3-4)

You can read more on all of these subjects in the cardinals.com notebook, but a few quick topics that might be of interest to you:

  • Jason Motte underwent an MRI on his right elbow on Tuesday, but that MRI has not yet been read. I was told that’s because team physician Dr. George Paletta was tied up this afternoon with several surgeries. The Cardinals will know either later today or tomorrow what Paletta sees in the picture.
  • A day after the Cardinals’ bullpen blew another lead, Mike Matheny didn’t announce any switches in bullpen roles. But he also didn’t brush off the possibility. “We’ll just see how the game goes,” Matheny said. I would envision Mitchell Boggs continuing to get the save opportunities for the time being. The more likely change now could be in the eighth inning, where perhaps Edward Mujica, Fernando Salas or Joe Kelly could assist. It will be an interesting to exercise to observe how Matheny — who believes there is power in showing his players he has faith in them — handles his bullpen amid this period of instability.
  • David Freese is out of the lineup today, but all involved insist his back is fine. Freese was on the field for infield work and batting practice Tuesday afternoon; and he showed no limitations during any of it. Matheny said that he intended to give Freese either today or tomorrow off and opted to sit Freese tonight because he liked the matchup better against Homer Bailey on Wednesday.

First pitch tonight is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT here at Busch Stadium. And down in Memphis, top prospect Oscar Taveras is scheduled to make the first Triple-A start of his career.

With news on Motte’s injury the season is likely in trouble without some move to acquire bullpen help.

The cardinals are not known to spend good money to compete in thid Division to win it. Our bull pen has shown in pressure situations can not batters out. its time to look.else where for a starter and take the pressure off of Boggs if not Mo this could be a long season. It seems we have to score a lot runs to win. A little concerned. A little concerned see how it works out. Does anybody out see this as an issue?

Sorry I meant to type closer. To take pressure off of Boggs.

St. Louis 17 11 .607. Just shy of the best record in MLB, with a Red Sox team which has allegedly adjusted its pitching suspiciously. With even 2/3 of those blown saves reversed, this would be the best team in MLB so far?
