May 30: Royals (21-29) @ Cardinals (35-17)

It’s been tough to escape the hype surrounding Michael Wacha’s arrival — now it’s time to see if he can match it with performance. Wacha will be facing a Royals team that has lost eight straight and he may be fighting the weather tonight, too. Rain is forecast throughout the evening, so there’s the possibility that could disrupt the otherwise highly-anticipated event.

If you missed it yesterday, here are Wacha’s thoughts about his big-league arrival.

The Cardinals made a pair of roster moves to add Wacha to both the 40- and 25-man rosters. Jaime Garcia was moved to the 60-day disabled list to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. Michael Blazek was optioned to Triple-A to clear space on the 25-man roster.

In other news today… don’t plan on seeing Edward Mujica should a save situation come up tonight. He has pitched in four straight games and said this afternoon that manager Mike Matheny informed him that he won’t be used tonight — and maybe not tomorrow either. There is always a concern about pushing a reliever too many days in a row.

Also, Jake Westbrook was very encouraged by how he felt during and after throwing 60-65 pitches in a bullpen session on Thursday afternoon. He’s hopeful that after he throws a shorter side session on Saturday that he’ll be cleared to start a Minor League rehab assignment next week.

Two wishes: (1) Matheny quits trying to bolster the confidence of his pet project Boggs by pitching him in close games. (2) Hrabosky quits saying that upon returning from minors, Boggs says it’s a “new season.” Every time he says that, Boggs gives up a home run on the next pitch.

I was floored when Boggs was put in. Why? To knock Wacha down a peg?

Maybe now Matheny knows what the rest of Cardinal nation already knows!!
